Hellenic Petroleum strike threatens gas supplies

With two 48-hour strikes called by Hellenic Petroleum employees later in the week, endless queues in front of gas stations are to be expected. The HP workers union announced two strikes between February 21 and 24 protesting what they call the upcoming breakdown of their working rights.

The gas station owners federation has informed its members about the effects of the upcoming strikes, asking them to order and arrange gas supply in time, if they want to avoid running out during the four days of the strike.

Meanwhile, gas station owners have troubles of their own. They have until March 31 to get their systems connected with Finance ministry's systems of gas input and output monitoring. The law was voted last year in order to allow the ministry to record all gas related transactions and stop gas providers from conning both state and customer.

If they fail to comply by late March, gas station owners are facing license revoke and fines worth 100000 euros by early April.

Since Greece is very low in alternative energy development and the majority of cars still run on gas, the upcoming strike is expected to cause chaos in the streets, with mini traffic jams caused in front of every gas station.
