The damage caused to the Metropolis of Ioannina due to the fire that broke out in the church in the early hours of Wednesday morning is significant

According to epiruspost, the church alarm that sounded after the fire detection was the one that mobilized the Authorities, shortly after 2:00.

Police vehicles initially arrived at the scene, which upon their arrival noticed smoke coming from inside the Church and the Fire Department was immediately called.

A short time later, six vehicles and 18 firefighters rushed to the scene, with the fire being brought under complete control, after an all-night battle with the flames, with the forces remaining in the area even after the fire was extinguished, in order to thoroughly check every part of the church.

According to initial reports, the fire appears to have started in the women's room, as the flames were first detected there.

The fire brigade entered the church through the main entrance and removed the icons of Saint Athanasius and Saint Kosmas Aitolos, which had not been touched by the fire.

However, the same did not happen with the "Epitaphion" that adorned the church and which was destroyed by the flames.

The damage inside the church and in the women's room is extensive, while the thick smoke has blackened a large part of the church and the frescoes.

The Fire Department's investigation into the incident is in full swing, as the causes of the fire remain unknown.

The only information known at first is that the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Athanasios had closed at approximately 19:00 on Tuesday and all areas were locked
