Greece Boosts Naval Firepower
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Hellenic Navy is enhancing its capabilities with the acquisition of advanced Exocet missiles and new patrol vessels.
Parliament's arms committee has approved the purchase of 16 MM-40 Block 3C Exocet missiles, the latest version of the French-built anti-ship weapon, for €33 million.
The missiles, with a firing range of 200 kilometers, will significantly boost the Navy's striking power. They can also hit coastal targets, including naval installations and strategic infrastructure, a capability lacking in older models.
In addition to the missiles, the committee approved a €15 million program to acquire three Marine Protector patrol vessels from the US Coast Guard.
The vessels, obtained at no cost through the US Excess Defense Articles program, will replace aging patrol boats and enhance surveillance capabilities in the Aegean Sea.
The Navy is also making progress with its heavy torpedo program for Type 214 submarines, with the arrival of the first batch of high-performance torpedoes in Salamina. Test firings are expected to begin soon.
These acquisitions are part of Greece's ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces and strengthen its defense capabilities in the region.
The advanced Exocet missiles, combined with new patrol vessels and torpedoes, will significantly enhance the Hellenic Navy's operational readiness and ability to protect Greece's maritime interests.
