Santorini: Continuous quakes alarm residents and authorities
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Anxiety and fear have gripped the residents of Santorini, due to the successive earthquakes that have occurred in recent days on the island.
Shortly before 2 am on Monday, a seismic tremor measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred off Santorini.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the tremor was located 22 km south of Amorgos and the focal depth was 10 km.
After the earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, dozens of tremors followed in the early morning in the underwater area between Santorini and Amorgos, with the largest, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, occurring at 4:35 am on Monday, 16 km. north-northwest of Anafi with a focal depth of 5 km, according to the Automatic Solution of the Geodynamic Institute.
It was preceded by two earthquakes, 3.9 Richter just before 3 am and 3.7 Richter earlier, according to the calculations of the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
"Three out of four phenomena that point to a volcanic eruption have occurred in Santorini," says Turkish professor
Residents and tourists are fleeing
According to what Open TV broadcasted this morning, there are people who have left the island. It is characteristic that the flights are full, while there are only tickets left for one flight departing from the island in the next few hours, with prices reaching close to 200 euros.
Indicative of the concern prevailing on the island are what the mayor of Thira, Nikos Zorzos, said this morning to SKAI. “It is normal to have concern [...]. Some have left. The permanent residents are calmer. We do not, of course, have a phenomenon of generalized flight. There are some who are leaving because they are worried,” he noted.
The largest earthquake in Santorini on Sunday measured 4.7 on the Richter scale
On Sunday (2/2) the largest tremor was of the order of 4.7 points and occurred at 19:45, while four minutes earlier (at 19:41) another tremor had occurred, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale.
The seismic activity in the area between Santorini and Amorgos led to an emergency meeting yesterday afternoon at the Maximos Mansion, chaired by the Prime Minister.
The state apparatus is on alert
The Fire Department, Armed Forces and EKAB/ambulance services are on alert, while special emergency units of EMAK, EMODE as well as drone operators have gone to Santorini for precautionary reasons.
