Successful transplant to 32-year-old at Hippokrateio - He received the kidney of 14-year-old Spyros who drowned in the Arachthos

The kidney transplant from the 14-year-old who drowned in the Arachthos River to a 32-year-old man was completed with complete success at the "Ippokrateio" hospital in Thessaloniki. The recipient will remain under close medical supervision for the next 24 hours, according to the prescribed protocol.
At the same time, in the early hours of Tuesday, the organs will be removed from the youngest child, aged 12, who also drowned in the river, so that a liver transplant can follow at the same hospital in Thessaloniki. In addition, the possibilities of transplanting the pancreas and a kidney will be examined.
The first transplant at "Ippokrateio" went well, as reported by the general surgeon, associate professor of Surgery - Transplantation at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikolaos Antoniadis, who underlined the importance of organ donation by relatives, who in the midst of unspeakable pain decide to donate what is most precious.
"Brain death is death. It is confirmed by tests that are absolute and I mention this because there are certain doubts. The brain is dead and the body is maintained by machines. The maintenance of the circulatory system is artificial. We must mention this so that there is no doubt in society,” said Mr. Antoniadis.
“Organs are utilized and always some of our fellow human beings benefit. Kidney transplants are the only treatment, being on dialysis is not a solution, while liver and heart transplants are life-saving operations,” concluded the surgeon.
In addition, one of the 14-year-old’s corneas is at the AHEPA hospital in Thessaloniki, where his transplant is expected to be scheduled.
