Police have detained 14 people for questioning after a group of assailants firebombed the Kypseli police station in central Athens, capping a weekend of tension marking the anniversary of a teenager's police killing.

Authorities said a group of five to six individuals launched approximately seven Molotov cocktails at the precinct late Sunday before fleeing into the surrounding streets.

No injuries were reported, though a police vehicle with civilian license plates sustained damage and a trash bin was set ablaze at the intersection of Drosopoulou and Thiras streets.

Officers immediately swept the area, detaining 14 suspects.

Twelve were transferred to the State Security Directorate at police headquarters, while two were held at the Kypseli station.

As of Monday morning, no formal arrests had been announced.

The attack occurred just one day after the 17th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a police guard in the nearby Exarchia district.

The date typically serves as a flashpoint for clashes between anarchist groups and law enforcement. While Saturday's main marches resulted in 15 arrests, Sunday's assault suggests unrest has lingered in the capital.

The government has faced criticism from opposition parties Pasok and Syriza regarding public safety strategies, though officials maintain that rapid police response prevented wider damage.
