Russian Fm Lavrov uses harsh rhetoric against Greece

Featured Russian Fm Lavrov uses harsh rhetoric against Greece

Harsh language against Athens and the support it provides to Ukraine, during the four years of war with Russia, was used a few days ago by Sergey Lavrov, during a presentation of Moscow's diplomatic work in 2025. The Russian Embassy in Greece presents the Russian Foreign Minister's position on the issue in a post.

Specifically, according to the post, in a relevant question he received, Lavrov stated that with the start of the war, "Greece interrupted its cooperation with Russia, which had been built over many decades. An entire spectrum of Russian-Greek cooperation was dissolved, from politics and economics to culture and humanitarian issues. After almost four years, there has been no change in the approach of official Athens towards our country. We continue to hear aggressive anti-Russian statements and unfounded Russophobic accusations against us. Russia would never allow something similar to happen to Greece.”

The Russian minister accused Athens of sending weapons to Ukraine, saying that “it was among the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use daily against civilians in Donbas, in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, in Crimea and other southern regions of our country. And all this despite the fact that a numerous Greek diaspora has been living there for centuries. It is huge, peace-loving, loves its historical homeland, has always strengthened ties and contacts in every possible way and has never contributed to negative developments or trends. But Athens did not think about them.”

In addition, he also focused on the strategic agreement between Athens and Kiev, which was signed in November, regarding the development of naval drones.

In detail, the Russian embassy's post states:

"The response of the Russian Foreign Ministry to the question about the statements of the Greek leadership about Russia received for the press conference of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia S. Lavrov on the results of Russian diplomatic activities in 2025

Question: The Prime Minister of Greece K. Mitsotakis stated: "We are in a state of war with Russia". Is this really true?

Answer: With the start of the special military operation, Greece interrupted its cooperation with Russia, which had been built over many decades. A whole spectrum of Russian-Greek cooperation was dissolved, from politics and economics to culture and humanitarian issues. After almost four years there has been no change in the approach of official Athens towards our country. We continue to hear aggressive anti-Russian statements and unfounded Russophobic accusations against us. Russia would never allow something similar to happen to Greece.

Athens was one of the first to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian armed forces use daily against civilians in Donbas, in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, in Crimea and other southern regions of our country. And all this despite the fact that a numerous Greek diaspora has been living there for centuries. It is huge, peace-loving, loves its historical homeland, has always in every possible way strengthened ties and contacts and has never contributed to negative developments or trends.

But Athens did not think about them. They did not take into account that their brothers who maintain relations with Greece live there, they have relatives there, and that Athens' actions cause them a colossal number of not only problems, but also direct threats to their lives and health.

Another confirmation of the above was the so-called agreements with the Nazi regime in Kiev on November 17, 2025, including the development and use of marine unmanned vehicles. This step, like any other anti-Russian action of the "collective West" aimed at "defeating Russia on the battlefield" (in reality, at waging war to the last Ukrainian), received due assessment from our side.

In addition, Athens joined the PURL initiative for the purchase of American weapons by European countries for the Ukrainian armed forces, which Greece previously hesitated to do. There is no doubt that their "senior comrades" persistently pointed out this "omission" and finally achieved their goal. Everyone knows that Kiev, indifferent to the defense capabilities of Greece itself, is methodically pressuring the Greek leadership to transfer to the Ukrainian armed forces the highly effective air defense systems of Russian and Soviet manufacture, which are currently in service with the Armed Forces of Greece. All of the above clearly shows the neoliberal totalitarianism that reigns in the European Union.

It is characteristic that the Greek The Greek public, to put it mildly, does not share this approach. According to a poll conducted for the newspaper "Kathimerini" in July 2025, 72% of respondents believe that Athens should maintain a neutral stance in the Ukrainian conflict.
