Greek authorities helped a Celebrity Cruises ship into port following a technical issue on board, according to the local coast guard and cruise company.
The Hellenic Coast Guard’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center notified the Port Authorities of Piraeus and Keratsini “of the loss of control of a cruise ship … due to a malfunction in the electrical distribution panels, in the sea area outside the port of Piraeus,” according to a news release. The alert came in the evening hours of Feb. 14 local time, authorities said.
Celebrity Infinity was wrapping up a nearly two-week cruise from Barcelona, and had been scheduled to stay overnight in Piraeus – the main port for Athens – before ending on Feb. 16, according to CruiseMapper.
There were no injuries reported or marine pollution observed, and the ship safely sailed into port with the help of four tugboats, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard. “The 1st Port Department of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus prohibited its departure until a certificate of damage repair was presented by the classification society monitoring it,” the release continued.
