Mr Vournazos is ucharacteritic,a as he decided relatively late in life to migrate, as he was already 71 years old in 1995! Before emigrating, Mr Vournazos led a very difficult life, scared by war and occupation and the poverty of the postwar period.
Nick Vournazos was born in 1924 in Chrysanthos, in Egialeia. He had a very difficult childhood. While finishing elementary school, he was forced to work to feed his six smaller siblings. During the war and occupation, he joined the National Liberation Front (EAM) from where he was fired after the Varkiza Accord. In 1951 he succeeded and finished high school and then was admitted to Panteion University. However, financial problems did not allow him to finish his studies.
Years passed, and in 1995, he decided to take the plunge and go to faraway Australia. He enrolled at the University of New England in 2002, 78 years old, he realized what had set out to do at the Panteion: he got a university degree in literature. He was the oldest person at the graduation ceremony .
Today, he is 90 years old and lives with his wife, Anna, with whom they decided to donate the sum of 1.5 million euros to the organizations "Care".
