Illegal animal husbandry on downtown Athens rooftop: Goats, chickens, ducks in inappropriate living conditions
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The 55-year-old owner of the 16th floor of the building in Ampelokipi had set up a regular farm, with a pen, a chicken coop and cages, hosting chickens, ducks and goats on the roof of the high rise.
The employees of the Urban Fauna Department of the Municipality of Athens, who were called after a relevant complaint, could not believe their eyes when they saw dozens of domestic animals living in miserable conditions on the roof of the building, on Kifissias Avenue.
The Municipality team informed the Police and removed the animals from the roof, as can be seen in the images presented by protothema.gr.
The Municipality notified the Police while removing the animals from the terrace
These are 36 chickens, 3 ducks, 7 other birds and 15 goats. As stated in the relevant announcement by the Municipality of Athens, some of the poultry were transferred to the National Garden while the remaining animals, after being checked by a veterinarian, will be transferred to safe areas of the Green Directorate.
The Animal Protection Prosecutor was immediately informed of the case while a case file was filed by the Ampelokipi Police Department against the 55-year-old owner of the premises, who is being sought in order to be arrested.
According to information, the businessman had set up the makeshift pen for at least 5 years, while several employees in the building knew that animals were being housed on his rooftop.
