Images reminiscent of a movie unfolded on Monday morning (20/4) in the area of the construction site for the renovation of the Papafi stables, in eastern Thessaloniki, following a subsidence that appears to have been caused by the drilling of an EYATH pipeline during work for optical fibers.

As a result of the subsidence, a car fell into the construction site and others were found on the side of the road. “I heard a noise like an earthquake at the time of the subsidence, we didn’t know what it was,” said a resident of the area.

As residents report, the water supply has been stopped since approximately 9.30 in the morning. At the same time, the 28-year-old man who was arrested for the incident with the land subsidence in Toumba was released by order of the prosecutor in view of conducting a preliminary investigation.

The prosecutor ordered a preliminary investigation to be conducted so that the expert reports can be completed and included in the case file, so that any criminal responsibilities can be assessed later.

Earlier, the authorities who arrived at the scene proceeded to block Sidirokastro, Alonissos and Kythnos streets, while a team from the municipality of Thessaloniki also rushed to the scene, conducting an autopsy to assess the situation.

"Fortunately, no one was in danger. We have already established a committee that will examine these issues. "The contractor has also requested an expert opinion," emphasized, among other things, the Deputy Mayor for Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Prodromos Nikiforidis.
