Greek American tourists suffer knife attack at Acropolis entrance

The bloody incident occurred shortly after 08:00, when the 60-year-old attacker attacked a Greek-American couple of tourists, a 53-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman with a knife.

The woman was slightly injured in the hand while the man was more seriously injured in the leg. Police officers from the DI.AS. Team, who rushed to the scene, applied a tourniquet to the man to stop the bleeding, while an EKAB ambulance then arrived at the scene and provided them with first aid.

The two tourists were subsequently transferred to the "Red Cross" hospital, where they are being treated out of danger.

The perpetrator, who is said to be suffering from psychological problems and has a criminal record, was stopped and arrested by officers from the Athens Police Department. According to information, he has a criminal record.

Speaking to the Orange Press Agency, an expatriate from Australia describes what happened. “We were in line and we were waiting to get in. The doors did not open for us to get in and then we heard voices and people scattered everywhere and we turned around to see what was happening. And we saw a man with a knife and he went to slaughter a woman,” said Connie, an expatriate from Australia. As she explains, “then we saw the woman who was down on the ground and had blood on her back. We were scared, we went a little further, but then we slowly saw the police and they came closer again and we continued on our way.”

Immediately afterwards, according to the eyewitness, who was with her daughter at the scene, the Greek Police and the Emergency Medical Service took over. The tourists who were at the ticket offices were removed by the police until it became clear what had happened, while several also gave statements.
