German authorities have arrested a Georgian man with an outstanding conviction for a murder committed in Greece, who is considered to be one of the key hitmen used in at least four murders and a series of other crimes committed during a bloody feud between rival criminal gangs in Greece, according to a Hellenic Police announcement on Friday.
Earlier, the Hellenic Police had also released the identity details and photographs of a second man wanted in connection with the same case.
Both suspects, according to the Greek 'FBI' homicide department, are sought in connection with the murder of Evangelos Zambounis, who was pumped full of 97 bullets fired from a Kalashnikov rifle on January 14, 2024, during an ambush set up outside a petrol station owned by the victim in Neos Kosmos.
The man arrested in Germany on July 31, in the context of the Hellenic Police organised crime department's cooperation and information -sharing with German authorities, is a 31-year-old Georgian national with a European arrest warrant pending against him for three murders and one attempted murder carried out in Greece.
He is a suspect for the Skaftouros, Roubetis and Mouzakitis murders and the attempted murder of one more person in Katerini during the so-called 'Greek mafia wars', while there were also pending convictions against him for the Zambounis murder in Neos Kosmos and for participation in a criminal organisation responsible for arson and explosions, as well as outstanding arrest warrants for the abduction of a prison officer and possession of a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
The 31-year-old is suspected of belonging to a criminal outfit led by a Georgian man known as 'Edik', which was engaged in the production and sale of large quantities of contraband tobacco products in Athens, Thessaloniki and other areas of Greece and dismantled in March 2025. Procedures have been initiated for the 31-year-old's extradition to Greece.
