Events will be hosted by the local Jewish community, the municipality and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), as was announced in a press conference on Wednesday.
In the context of the events titled “Never Again. Thessaloniki-Auschwitz 71 years after”, the City of Thessaloniki and the Jewish community will organize a symbolic march on Sunday from Eleftherias Square to the Old Railway Station Square in memory of the nearly 50,000 Thessaloniki Jews who perished in the crematoriums of the Nazi concentration camps.
The first train to Auschwitz left from Thessaloniki in the early morning hours of March 15, 1943, Jewish Community President David Saltiel said, adding that a total of 46,000 members of the Jewish community were led to Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, the majority of whom never came back.
