- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The government of the Netherlands has decide to return four icons dating to the 16th century to the government of Cyprus. The icons, originally housed in the monastery of Christ Antifonitis in occupied Keryneia, were looted after the Turkish invasion of 1974.
The icons were originally positioned in the church templon and depict the Evangelists Mark and John, and the Apostles Peter and Paul. The decision of the Dutch government was announced by the founder of the organization "Walk of Truth," Tasoula Chatzifoti during a round table discussion on 'Art Trafficking and Restitution' that took place at the Peace Palace in the Hague.
Today, the ambassador of Cyprus to the Netherlands will sign the agreement for the transfer of the icons that are expected on Cyprus, on Friday.
