Meimarakis in Tirana lends support to Albanian european visions

The President of Parliament Vangelis Meimarakis, was in Tirana after an invitation by his Albanian counterpart Ilir Meta, and made positive statements concerning Albania's EU accession.

Upon meeting Meta in the Albanian capital, Meimarakis stated that he wants the country to become an official EU candidate in June. He added that Greece has consistently promoted the country's EU and NATO accession bids, which will lead toward growth, security and stability in the challenged Balkan region.

Meta commented on the "bridge of friendship and cooperation" binding the two neighbors, referring to the Albanian community in Greece and the Greek population in Albania. Mr Μeimarakis also discussed collaborative schemes in the energy security sector.

During his Albanian tour, Meimarakis held meetings with President Bujar Nisani, Prime Minister Edi Rama and opposition party leader Lulzim Basha. Today, the President of Parliament plans to participate in the XII Conference of the Speakers of the Parliaments of the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative, conducted under the auspices of the Albanian Presidency.
