Gavdos Won't Vote in EU elections
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The citizens of the island of Gavdos the southernmost point of Greece and Europe, will not be voting in European elections, as so they decided.
After an open meeting on the island, citizens and local officials decided not to vote as a protest against the destruction of the Syrian chemical arsenal in waters close to the island.
The 152 permanent residents of the island agreed on an announcement that was published to spread their message.
In the announcement Gavdos residents speak of a criminal act by Europe and the UN, and chided europarliamentarians who said their actions was too severe. However, as they point out simple people throughout Europe heard their call, while Greeks massively supported demonstrations against the destruction of the chemicals in waters off Crete.
The announcement concludes that the citizens of Gavdos are “turning their backs on such an indifferent Europe that with such frivolity sells out our lives.”
