Kefalonia Quake's Final Assessment

It has been six months since the quakes that shook Kefalonia, and now after field checks and studies the final tally of destruction has been ascertained.

According to figures released by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Michalis Chrysochoidis to the Standing Committee on Production and Trade, 3,000 checks were conducted on residences.
From these it follows that 200 buildings should be demolished immediately, another 1500 buildings were marked "yellow" (severe damage), while a similar number are deemed appropriate.

Currently about 600 families have received rent subsidies totaling 400,000 euros, while 370 others are in waiting.

The first phase of reconstruction at the port of Lixouri, where the quake caused serious damage, has been completed and the contract with the company that will undertake the second phase will be signed in the coming days. The work will begin after the summer.

Procedures have gone ahead for 9 of the 17 hotels that have submitted applications for repair processes, with a budget of 1.1 million euros. At the same time, of 190 applications for building repairs, 53 have been checked, 27 licenses are being issued, and ten have been completed. Work for the restoration of the road in Myrtos, to reopen the beach is still ongoing.

The minister admitted that there is are legal issues concerning the creation of new social housing. According to press reports, when the model was applied to Keratsini after the great earthquake, the State had to secure the consent of the affected owners to rebuild on their properties new residential complexes. However, a legislative regulation will be necessary.
