Surprise maneuvers send message to Albania
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
A clear message to Albania was sent by the Chief of the Hellenic Armed Forces General Staff, general Mihalis Kostarakos in the framework of exercise “Pyrpolitis 5/14,” of the Rapid Response Force – North Sector, with their focus on the border area of Sagiada, Thesprotia prefecture.
To this purpose, just a day after Gen. Kostarakos put the air defense grid on surprise high alert, today he issued a surprise order to a unit from the Commando Battalion II to board helicopters and with escort and support from Apache AH-64A+ attack choppers to rush to Sagiada and deal with an incident there.
It must be noted that bilateral relations with Albania at a historic low, after the neighboring country pulled out of an agreement delineating the EEZ of the two countries, while in revamping local governments the Albanian government is redrawing local boundaries in order to gerrymander the Greek minority vote. This has led to intensely worded demarches from the Greek foreign ministry.
