Illegal Immigrants Double in One Year

The relevant authorities for border control in Greece gave statistics about incidents along the country's border during June.

Results show that year on year the number of undocumented migrants more than doubled as in June this year there were 2,783 arrests during 96 different incidents, as against 1,174 arrest in 46 incidents last June. In May 2014 there 1,628 arrests in 67 incidents in May 2014. During June this year, 25 traffickers were arrested (23, last June, and 36 in May 2014) and 19 boats were confiscated (6 in June 2013, and 17 in May 2014).

There were efforts to exit Greece illegally by 193 persons in 53 different incidents, 28 traffickers were arrested and 17 vehicles were confiscated, along with a boat and 42 forged travel documents.

Meanwhile, in 27 cases of drug trafficking, concerning 60 persons, in June, coast guard officers confiscated 2 tons and 131 kilos of heroin, 547 kilos of cannabis, 53 cannabis plants, 7.3 grams of cocaine and small quantities of barbiturates and amphetamines.

In 6 other cases, with 26 arrests, officers confiscated 1,196,993 cigarette packs costing the state 4,044,661 euros in lost taxes. In another case 8 persons illegally imported 13,667 liters of whiskey causing a loss of 216,392 euros of state revenue.

Finally, 16.6 tons of raw petroleum, and 39.4 tons of refined oil were confiscated with lost revenue calculated at 18,240 euros.
