Greece Reports First 2014 West Nile Virus Patient

  • Written by

The Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) ran laboratory tests, and found the first West Nile virus infected patient of the year.

The victim is an 85-year-old man who lives in Eastern Attiki and has reportedly not recently journeyed to other regions in the nation. KEELPNO has briefed regional authorities nationwide on additional West Nile viral cases.

After examining 2010-2013 epidemiological information and global West Nile scientific studies, KEELPNO has advised the implementation of mosquito controlling efforts. As reported by KEELPNO, over the past five years, the West Nile virus has regularly infected Greek residents during the summer seasons in varied regions of the country.

A regular mosquito bite transports the infection, that generally produces temperate or no signs of illnesses. Chronic disease patients and senior citizens face the greatest risk if infected with the West Nile Virus.
