Three Cypriot Antiquities Employees Contract Typhus
Three Cypriot Department of Antiquities employees have caught typhus, while working in Nicosia's ancient burial grounds.
Health delegates are currently investigating the case, after the three were rushed to Nicosia Hospital after suffering from the bacterial infection. Archeologist George Filotheou described to the media their conditions that occurred on June 2nd, after the three workers experienced extremely high fevers. After receiving proper medical treatment they were released, however they were readmitted to the hospital on Monday, and are being kept under medical supervision.
Community chief Christakis Panayiotou stated, "We were told that the area must be cleaned but there has been no response", as reported by Parikiaki. Typhus is generally caught by lice, fleas and rats. If not properly treated, 10% to 60% of affected patients die from the disease, while individuals over 60-years-old have the highest rate of infection.
