As part of the celebration of Greek Language Day, the awarding of Greek Language Certificates to the successful candidates of the St. Catherine Examination Center took place on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the premises of the St. Catherine Church.

The event, as stated in the relevant press release, was co-organized by the Embassy of Greece and the St. Catherine Examination Center. The event was opened with a greeting by the Ambassador of Greece in Washington, Ms. Katerina Nasika, who congratulated the students, teachers and parents and referred to the importance of teaching the Greek language. Ms. Stavroula Skrepetou, Director of the St. Catherine Examination Center, then spoke and presented the diplomas.

The successful candidates come from the following Greek language schools: St. Catherine Greek School (Virginia), St. George Greek School (Maryland), St. Sophia Greek School (Washington D.C.), Potomac Greek School (Maryland) and the Nativity of the Lord School (Virginia).

The students had prepared a particularly moving program which included, among other things, reciting poems and reading texts. The event was also attended by Embassy officials, teachers of the Greek Language Schools and parents.

The Certificate of Greek Language Proficiency is a state title certifying knowledge of the Greek language, which is granted after examinations held all over the world. It was established by Presidential Decree 363/15.10.1998 (Government Gazette 242/29.10.1998), while the official organization of the examinations is the Greek Language Center based in Thessaloniki.

Obtaining the certificate proves the level of proficiency of the holder in the Greek language in the labor market, while giving the possibility of enrolling in Greek-speaking programs of Greek Universities, as well as the possibility of certifying Greek language proficiency for appointment in the Greek State.

Furthermore, in the USA, the Greek Language Certificate is directly linked to the Seal of Biliteracy in the following States: New York, Illinois, Maryland, California, Ohio, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, as well as in the District of Columbia.

The exams are held once a year, in mid-May, in Greece and abroad, at Examination Centers that have been recognized by the Greek Language Center (https://www.greek-language.gr/certification/index.html).
