A special moment for the Greek Orthodox community in the United States took place at Yankee Stadium in New York, as part of the Greek Jersey Night event, where Archbishop Elpidophoros of America starred.
As can be seen in the photos he published, the Archbishop was on the field of the historic stadium wearing the characteristic striped jersey of the New York Yankees, before making the established symbolic first pitch (ceremonial first pitch) before the Yankees' match against the Chicago White Sox.
In his post, he states that Yankee Stadium was filled with intense Greek color, as members of the Greek Orthodox community and friends of Hellenism gathered to celebrate the evening dedicated to Greece.
According to Archbishop Elpidophoros, the historic stadium was transformed into a place of unity, tradition and faith, where people of different generations came together to honor their common identity.
In the images, the Archbishop can be seen holding the ball just before the throw, while in another snapshot he performs the first symbolic shot amidst an atmosphere of excitement. As he notes in his post, his presence on the field was greeted with warm applause by the fans in the stands.
The Archbishop was accompanied, among others, by the Archdiocesan District Chancellor and Camp St. Paul Director Fr. Elias Willis, as well as Archons Michael Neamonitakis and Bill Grous.
The appearance of the Archbishop of America at the iconic Yankees stadium is a rare image, connecting Hellenism and the Greek Orthodox community in the USA with one of the most recognizable sports symbols of the country.
