Featured Eliza Konofagou: The Greek researcher from Columbia University at the top of American innovation

From the Varvakeios School to the National Academy of Inventors of the United States, the path of Mrs. Eliza Konofagou is a journey of scientific perseverance and innovation.

For two decades, the Greek professor of Biomedical Technology at the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences of Columbia University in New York has focused on developing innovative applications of ultrasound in medicine and attempts to solve one of the most difficult problems of her science: how can doctors deliver effective treatments into the brain, overcoming the blood-brain barrier, its natural defense system.

Ms. Konofagou's research career was recently recognized with her election to the 2025 Class of Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), one of the most important institutions recognizing innovation and inventiveness in the United States.

This distinction is awarded to scientists whose patented inventions have an economic and social impact and confirms her ability to transform a laboratory idea into technology with real prospects for improving the lives of patients. In a ceremony held on June 4, 2026 at the Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles, Eliza Konofagou was officially inducted into the 2025 Class of Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), sealing an international recognition for her work and inventions.
