Global Educational and Maritime Leaders Sign Significant "Blue Frontiers" Agreement at ACS Athens to Champion Ocean Stewardship

Global Educational and Maritime Leaders Sign Significant "Blue Frontiers" Agreement at ACS Athens to Champion Ocean Stewardship (0)

ACS Athens proudly hosted the signing ceremony for the Blue Frontiers Program, an inspiring international partnership between Roger Williams University, the International Propeller Club Port of Piraeus, the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, and ACS Athens. This collaborative initiative establishes a strategic alliance dedicated to advancing maritime education and ocean stewardship for the next generation of leaders.

The program, centered on a commitment known as "Our Pledge," offers students a real-world summer exploration of the Earth’s oceans and the burgeoning global Blue economy. By combining academic rigor with scientific research and industry networking, the partners aim to inspire youth to protect and sustainably manage marine environments.

The event featured impactful remarks by ACS Athens President Dr. Peggy Pelonis and Mr. Costis Frangoulis, President of the International Propeller Club, Port of Piraeus, whose vision and leadership continue to champion environmental stewardship and youth opportunity. The ceremony also welcomed Dr. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Greek Prime Minister’s Envoy for the Ocean and Chair of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Protection, who underscored the national and global importance of such initiatives.

A significant highlight of the partnership is the generous scholarship support provided by Mr. Frangoulis and the Propeller Club, which helps make this transformative experience accessible to students. Additional insights were shared during the ceremony by Ms. Carla Tanas, Dean of the Institute, and Ms. Beatriz Tintoré of the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, who both emphasized the vital intersection of research, sustainability, and experiential learning.

Through the Blue Frontiers summer program, students are challenged to embrace Conscious Global Citizenship—applying their skills, compassion, and learning to protect the oceans and improve life and living for future generations.

The official agreement was signed on May 13, 2026, at ACS Athens, marking a new chapter in international educational collaboration for the benefit of the global maritime community.

McCABE FAMILY DONATES PHOTOGRAPHS TO CONSULATE OF GREECE IN NEW YORK

McCABE FAMILY DONATES PHOTGRAPHS TO CONSULATE OF GREECE IN NEW YORK

The photography exhibit, GREECE: An Enchanted Land, opened at the Consulate of Greece in New York on June 7th 2022. The Consul General, Konstantinos Koutras, welcomed guests and spoke about the iconic images of Greece in the 1950s, caught through the lenses of internationally acclaimed photographer, Robert McCabe.

Robert McCabe greeted the guests via video from his second home in Greece, and his younger brother, Peter McCabe, attended the exhibit and shared some stories about Robert McCabe and his career.

The highlight of the opening was the surprise announcement by the Consul General about the McCabe’s Family donation of photographs to the Consulate of Greece in New York in memory of Dina Filippeou McCabe. The New York Consulate was Dina McCabe's anchor to Greece, and just a five-minute walk from their home. The photographs will now be a permanent collection of the Consulate.

Robert McCabe’s work has become an important reference to Greece’s history and landscapes. His presence in Greece as a photographer during 1950s has played an integral role in archiving photos of Greece as they have never been seen before.

His books on Mykonos, Santorini, Mycenae, and recent publication on Kasos, are just a few of his magnificent photographs of a bygone era in Greece. His lens captured the country before it developed into the international tourist destination it is today.

The exhibit was curated by long-time Robert McCabe fan, television personality, producer, and director, Yanna Darilis.

The exhibit will run through July 7th 2022

Entrance is free to the public

About Robert McCabe

Robert McCabe was born in Chicago in 1934 and grew up in Rye, New York. His father worked for a picture newspaper in New York City, and because of his father’s gift of a Kodak Baby Brownie in 1939, McCabe started taking photographs when he was five. After Robert became a newspaper photographer, his interest shifted from hard news stories to people and landscapes, and the rest was history.

His first photographs of Europe were the result of a trip in 1954 to France, Italy, and Greece.  He returned to Greece in 1955 and 1957 and photographed the Cyclades for National Geographic. His iconic images of Greece have drawn much attraction and have become a rare glimpse of Greece in a lost era.

He has published 18 photo books on subjects including Greece, France, Italy, China, Antarctica, New York City and Havana. McCabe has exhibited his work in Greece the United States, London, Paris, and Brussels.

Greek of the Week: Gregory Pappas

On the first weekend of June, the long-awaited Greek America Foundation festivities descended upon New York City bringing star-studded events to celebrate and “honor those North American individuals who strive for excellence in their careers, philanthropic life and in the service of the public.” The Greek America Foundation is an internationally acclaimed organization that supports and celebrates Greek culture and heritage, as well as humanitarian causes. It was founded by Gregory Pappas in 2007 with the intention that “it was time to get beyond the baklava. It was time to stop breaking plates, and to start breaking stereotypes.” He has gone above and beyond and has reigned in a groundbreaking era of inclusion, by recognizing a new generation of Greek America visionaries by honoring, supporting, and celebrating their accomplishments.
