PAOK Files Formal Appeal

  • Written by

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) received a PAOK appeal, concerning a three-point game deduction, that was a result of crowd disturbances.

The team claimed that this act forfeited its place in the Champions League next season.  The Hellenic Football Association (EPO) sanctioned the footballers and instructed that PAOK play two games behind closed doors.

The football team was also fined for 50,000 euros, due to stadium anarchy during the Greek Cup's semi-final on April 15th. These events led to PAOK's dismissal in the Champion League qualifiers, where Panathinaikos placed first, with a one point lead over the troubled team.

In an official PAOK statement, the footballers stated: "After the 'scandalous' decision by the Greek FA that culminated with the points deduction in the playoffs and the lack of possibility of having the case heard by an independent body, PAOK FC will take its case to CAS to overturn both punishing decisions".

Earlier this week, PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis and next season's appointed coach Angelos Anastasiadis commented that they have found the: "ideal solution", as reported by Kathimerini. The newly chosen coach, reigned over the Greek team before in 1997 to 1999, and from 2002 to 2004.
