Kerkyra girl going to Junior Olympics

The village of Pagi in north Kerkyra (Corfu) located 39 km away from the capital of the island is home to a great young talent for Greek athletics, Konstantina Romaiou who won the triple jump in the track and field youth national championship held in Trikala.

The 17 year old from Kerkyra, who loved to watch track events on television stood out from the other children at school games. Since the fourth grade, twice a week her wage earning parents, of three children, took her to the island's capital for training.
Her thirst for achievement is mirrored in her eyes and with her talent coaches are convinced that she achieve a lot. In Trikala, she scored a personal best of 12.70 meters, despite the rain, and even though her coach Pavlos Skordilis asked her to stop, but she continued to try and break the national record in her class (12.93 m).
She also excelled a few days earlier in Baku, Azerbaijan at the European qualifying matches leading to the Junior Olympics in China, with a successful jump of 12.62 meters becoming one the six qualifying for Nanjing, even though her coach wasn't with her.
All this is the sunny side of the story of Konstantina Romaiou, because there is a darker side which shows the inability and neglect of the state, despite the obligation to support such efforts.
Her village, Pagi, has no high school and the children go to school by bus covering a distance of 10 km. So Constantina wakes up every morning at 06.50 and after classes, catches another bus travelling a further 29 km to the Kerkyra and returns exhausted to Pagi at 21.30 in the evening.
Her father is a municipal employee and her mother cooks in a restaurants in the summer, struggling to make ends meet with three children, but Kostantina's major complaint is that there is no time to eat properly because she eats on buses and dreams of being able to eat like all people.
Kerkyraikos athletic club official Nikos Moschos and coach Pavlos Skordilis, sensitized the public and Konstantina is being helped by a wonderful club called 'Support against substance dependence.'
Kerkyra has gained much distinction in all fields of arts, science, sports, and culture and has helped a lot of talented people. The fans and the people of the club believe that the same will happen with Kostantina, because she has shown that she can bring praise to her island and her country.
