Chinese tourists eye Santorini, Athens, Crete

Santorini, Athens and Crete top internet searches by Chinese tourists, according to Johnny Zhu, general manager of Baidu, China’s dominant search engine.

He took part in a conference on the penetration prospects of Greek tourism market in China over the Internet, held in Athens and organized by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels.

Zhu said that more than 3 million searches are recorded annually in Baidu - with over 720,000 searches for Athens and 180,000 for the islands. Santorini emerges as the most popular island in Chinese preferences with 2.4 million searches and predicted that searches for Greece in Baidu are expected to exceed 7 million this year.

It is noted that Baidu was founded in 2000 and is the entry point to the Internet for 93% of the users of China's Internet.
