  • Written by

Greece has called on the United States to continue to maintain the Foreign Military Sales program, concerning its F-16 fighters.

U.S. Congress was given Greece's application request, along with the U.S. State Department's approval certification, by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, according to United Press International. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) oversees the FMS agenda.

The DSCA stated, "The government of Greece needs this aircraft support to ensure its F-16 fleet is properly sustained and modernized to maintain interoperability with the United States and other NATO countries...The continued support and maintenance of Greece's F-16 fleet will ensure the effectiveness of its capabilities and ability to support future contributions to NATO operations."

This covers the International Engine Management Program, the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program, the Electronic Combat International Security Assistance Program, the F-16 Technical Coordination Program, and Aircraft hardware and software. Greece also wishes to be supported regarding repair and spare parts, return and repair, and logistical and support materials. The possible sale is valued at $188 million dollars, while Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are forecasted to be the primary contractors.
