U.S. Ambassador to Greece Pearce Tours Byzantine & Christian Museum
U.S. Ambassador to Greece David Pearce recently toured the Byzantine and Christian Museum in the nation's capital, to view the El Greco exhibition currently on display.
The 16th century Cretan artist's works, whose birth name was Doménikos Theotokópoulo, are being showcased at the Museum to commemorate the 400th year anniversary of his death. The exhibit began in November and centers on the artistic and social elements of 16th century Crete.
This time period and location is when and where El Greco grew up and initially became intrigued by painting, prior to his move to Venice in 1567. The El Greco exhibition features early designs by the acclaimed painter, marking the first time that many of them have been showcased in Greece.
