NYC Council Budget Proposal Plans Revealed

  • Written by

One-thousand additional NYPD Officers, are being implemented in the City's Council Budget Proposal.

Today, Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito revealed the recommendations, concerning future budget talks with Mayor Bill de Blasio.

As reported by 1010 WINS, the Council Speaker explained, "We're going to put 1,000 more cops on the beat to give NYPD the tools they need to succeed". She also discussed her desire for 500 more civilian employees; to allow uniformed officers to work out in the field and not behind a desk.

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton's goal is to administer the additional police officers in housing project patrols. However, he favors the extra funding to be used towards pay increases. Bratton stated, "The issue of pay raises for my personnel, I'm more supportive of that at the moment than I am of additional officers...If more officers are given to me, more civilians, certainly I would find ways to use them, but again I think that discussion has just begun and is probably a long way from resolution".

Also included in the Proposal are universal free school lunches, homeless assistance programs, library enhancement, and a property tax system restoration. The Council Speaker declared, "The reality is if a child is hungry in school, they're not gonna focus, they're not gonna pay attention, they're not gonna learn".

Mayor de Blasio is predicted to showcase his executive budget proposal in early May. Mark-Viverito confirmed that the new program's cost is set at a total of $257 million dollars, which is only a portion of New York City's $73 billion dollar budget.
