Iraqi Ambassador in Athens Discusses Efforts Against IS
Iraqi Ambassador to Greece Burhan Jaff discussed the Hellenic state's participation in the U.S. led efforts against IS to BasNews.
Jaff stated, "According to Greece's Foreign Ministry, aid is being provided on two levels. First, militarily and secondly, humanitarian aid". The Ambassador added, "Due to Iraq and Syria's current situations, more than one million refugees have fled to Greece and they want to enter Europe through Greece. Greece's coast guards have arrested 17, 000 refugees who have illegally entered Greece and half of them are Syrian people".
Jaff discussed Greece's commitment to combating terrorism and current activities, "There are anecdotes about some mosques in Greece which are encouraging people to join IS on jihad. If this is true, they may even return to Greece as it is just one step to the Middle East and one step to Europe; it's a strategic country for the transfer of IS militants from the Middle East and vice versa".
The Iraqi Ambassador commented on Greek and Turkish relations concerning IS, "Greece has a strong relationship with Turkey economically and politically, and we wait to see what Turkey's position against IS will be, after the release of the 49 Turkish hostages captured by IS insurgents...All countries in the alliance have a mutual goal; annihilating IS".
