House Committee Requests Names of Cypriot HSBC Swiss Account Holders

  • Written by

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) ran an investigation, concerning 308 Cyprus-related account holders and companies that have funds concealed at HSBC bank.

The investigation examined more than 10,000 HSBC clients spanning 203 nations, according to Cyprus Mail. Previously leaked documents from 2008 were assessed by the ICIJ, whom tabled a list of clients who held Swiss HSBC accounts in 2006 and 2007, totaling over $100 billion dollars.

Between 1996 to 2005, Cypriot-related account holders and companies operated 553 individual Swiss accounts, while 25% were secured by Cypriot citizens. The House Ethics Committee has called upon the Finance Minister to secure the list and present it to the House.

Acting Committee Chairman Demetris Syllouris stated of Cyprus, "...could not have been the altar for the movement of money, or hiding capital, or graft, which is all the more reason why we should have the list so that we can escape the platitudes". The Chairman added, "This is information that, when made public, should start to reduce the unacceptable view that we are all the same."
