UN Special Advisor on Cyprus Eide Conducts Separate Cypriot Meetings
UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, is planning to conduct separate meetings with both territories of the nation this week.
The UN Special Advisor will meet with the Republic of Cyprus' President Nicos Anastasiades today. Eide traveled to Cyprus in hopes that UN-authorized discussions may resume again, after being stalled when Turkey illegally entered the South's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Later today, the UN Adviser will meet with Turkish-Cypriot chief Dervis Eroglu, according to Parikiaki. Eide is also planning to hold discussions with a variety of Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot delegates.
Additionally, Eide is hosting an event that includes media and female civil society representatives from both the North and the South. Espen Barth Eide is scheduled to depart on March 18th.
Last October, Cypriot President Anastasiades withdrew from engaging in peace discussions after the Turkish seismic research boat "Barbaros" defied the EEZ, while Turkey stated that its illegal NAVTEX activities will continue until next month.
