Britain Supports Cypriot Solution & UN Led Discussions

  • Written by

Britain has confirmed its support for a just solution to the Cypriot divide, as stated by High Commissioner Damian Roderic Todd, based in Nicosia.

Todd's comments follow a meeting with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, that took place at the Presidential Palace. The British High Commissioner applauded the Cypriot discussions between both sides, that will resume on May 15th.

The High Commissioner described, "...because Britain and Cyprus have so extraordinary human connections, culturally and in human terms. We want to make everything we can to bring about a settlement of the Cyprus issue," as reported by Parikiaki.

When queried if the EU will become involved in a solution for the island, Todd stated, "we are all working on the basis of an agreed framework of the UNSC resolutions" and that the UNSG Special Advisor or Cyprus Espen Barth Eide is working, "very hard and very well to bring about a settlement".

The British High Commissioner added, "The EU of course has an important role to play in support of that settlement I know that the UK and every other member of the EU will do what they can to help and of course the European role matters but it is a UN led process."

Todd further commented, "We have a framework of UNSC resolutions. Cyprus is a member of the EU as is the UK. A united Cyprus will be in the EU. Therefore the EU does have a role to play but the process is one which is led by the UN".
