Cyprus Holds Domestic Violence Conference

  • Written by

An initiative in Cyprus has been launched to fight against domestic violence directed towards women.

Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies Director Susana Pavlou offered statistics during her address on the island, that confirmed that one in five women in the nation have been violently victimized, either sexually or physically.

Pavlou discussed the rise in family violence and stated that in 2013 there were 777 domestic violence cases, while there were 719 in 2011, as reported by Parikiaki. 72.7% were physical violence assaults and 24.5% were mental abuse cases.

Commissioner of Administration and Human Rights Eliza Savvidou also spoke at the event. Savvidou remarked that the violence campaign strives to spread zero tolerance of violence against females. The efforts hope to shape the mentality of brutality against women and girls, as one that is completely unacceptable.
