Nicosia Holds Greek Solidarity Rally

  • Written by

Greek-Cypriots supporting Greece protested outside of Nicosia's European Union House, while waving Greek and Cypriot flags.

Participants held banners that read, "Solidarity to the Greek people" and "Resistance to the EU and the IMF's austerity policies," among other anti-austerity phrases. The rally was facilitated by communist political party AKEL and the Movement Against Foreclosures in Cyprus. It held a concert by Koullis Theodorou and a poem reading.

Party leader Andros Kyprianou was also in attendance. Kyprianou addressed the crowd and disapproved of the "provocative, unacceptable, and undemocratic" position by the EU directed towards Greece and its citizens. The party chief commented, "We will not falter...We will not stop fighting for a better future for the majority, instead of the few 'chosen ones'."

Kyprianou also voiced his discontent with the Cypriot government, "A miracle with youth unemployment at 35 per cent, with many young people opting to look for work abroad. A miracle with wages and pensions slashed by over 30 per cent. A miracle with poverty approaching 29 per cent, and pensioners' standard of living over 30 per cent lower."
