EC President Juncker Schedules First Official Trip to Cyprus
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has scheduled his first official visit to Cyprus tomorrow, concerning discussions on the nation's UN-led peace talks and economy.
Juncker is set to meet Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades. The European Commission described in a statement, "Energy questions and progress in the Cyprus talks will also feature high on the agenda."
The EC President will also meet Anastasiades' counterpart, Turkish-Cypriot chief Mustafa Akinci. The two plan to determine "how the Commission can better help the Turkish Cypriot community to prepare for the period" after a solution is reached.
Leaders from both territories will met for a working lunch inside the UN-controlled buffer zone. Juncker will conclude his Cypriot travels on Friday, when he is set to address parliament.
In a statement, the EC leader commented, "I am visiting Cyprus at a time when there is a unique opportunity to achieve a lasting, comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue."
