New vandalism was recorded in Hagia Sophia, Constantinople, as this time a decorative emblem was stolen from the door of the church.
As reported by the Turkish media A TV, the monument became the "target of the uneducated", after the attackers stole metal plates that adorn the main entrance of the church, a heinous act - a blow to the world's cultural heritage.
"Target of the uneducated" Hagia Sophia
The Turkish media hastened to condemn the unacceptable action and, according to what was translated by tourkikanea.gr, the A TV report states:
"Once again Hagia Sophia became the target of the uneducated. You will remember that in the past they caused damage to the imperial gate, the walls and the marbles. So now one of the emblems on the door of Hagia Sophia has disappeared. First it was the imperial gate, then the walls and marbles, and now the emblems. Every side of Hagia Sophia is sacred and that's probably why someone considered it sacred and took it home."
The journalist of A TV broadcast from inside Hagia Sophia:
"We are in Hagia Sophia, in one of the most important parts of the mosque, at the next gate from the Imperial. A particularly sad picture is observed there. There are numerous emblems, but, look, one of them does not exist at the moment. It was either stolen or lost."
This is yet another incident of violence and vandalism, while not even a month has passed since the last attack on the historic church of Hagia Sophia with the destruction of marbles, at the end of June.
