According to Bulgarian media, a Greek skier was crushed by an avalanche in Bulgaria and lost his life. The avalanche hit the Bulgarian ski resort of Borovets, crushing a group of Greek skiers and snowboarders in its wake.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon in the Markudjik 3 area, as a result of which a rescue operation was set up for the Greek man, who was initially reported as missing.
According to Novinite, the body of the missing Greek skier was found in Borovets and the search operation has been completed.
“Earlier we met the group of skiers and commented that the place is very dangerous. A few minutes later we saw them descending the steepest point one after the other. They didn't bring backpacks. Obviously, they were not prepared," Stefan Hristov, one of the participants in the rescue of those buried by the avalanche, told bTV, Novinite reported.
"The incident involved Greek citizens. They did not have the avalanche equipment with them, which is mandatory for off-piste skiing. The Markudjik 3 track is not working at the moment and that's where they took a risk. They entered extremely dangerous territory," said the director of the mountain rescue service, Emil Neshev.
According to earlier reports, the other members of the group of skiers managed to escape the avalanche, but one person was buried under the snow.
15 mountain rescuers with four search dogs participated in the rescue operation.
The avalanche is estimated to have been about 150 meters long and almost 30 meters wide
