Letter to the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola
Brussels, 3 September 2024
Dear Madam President,
We are writing to you to express our deep concern regarding the recent inappropriate behavior of the Left MEP in the European Parliament, Nikos Pappas. Recent reports in the Greek media have brought to light a series of back-to-back vulgar, racist, sexist and abusive attacks attributed to Mr. Pappas.
As the European Union calls for unity to tackle hate speech, it is worrying that a newly elected member of the European Parliament is adopting such behaviour. These actions are fundamentally against the principles and values of the European Union. Such statements have no place in an institution that represents the Republic, as it is the voice of European citizens.
In this context, we ask you to examine this case and call on the Group of the Left to take all necessary measures against the behavior of MEP Nikos Pappas, including his expulsion from the Group, as this behavior is not appropriate for a democratic elected representative in the European Parliament. Failure to act constitutes acquiescence in hostile practices.
Sincerely,
Manfred Weber
President of the Parliamentary Group of the EPP in the European Parliament
Elizabeth Vosenberg-Bryonidis
Head of the Greek Delegation in the Parliamentary Group of the EPP
