Professor Constantinos Foudas is the new president of the Geneva-based CERN board, beating out two other candidates in a competitive process.
The election of Mr. Foudas, whose term will begin in 2025 and end in 2027, is a particularly important development, as the distinguished professor of Physics at the University of Ioannina and scientific representative of Greece at CERN, is the first Greek to take the reins of the largest European nuclear and particle physics research laboratory.
His success in being selected is due to the targeted and strategically organized diplomatic mobilization, as well as to the scientific prestige of the Greek candidate.
Today, CERN is 70 years old, consists of 24 member states (Greece was a founding member), employs around 2,600 employees and offers services to over 600 research institutes and universities worldwide.
CERN provides a unique range of particle accelerator facilities that enable research at the cutting edge of human knowledge in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, while bringing together people from around the world to push the boundaries of science and technology for the benefit of all, and educates new generations of physicists, engineers and technicians, promoting the values of research and science.
