Cyprus: Complaints from the pseudo-state about the flights of French fighter jets in the airspace of Cyprus
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Four days after the flight of French fighter jets over the Lefka area in the occupied areas of Cyprus, the so-called “Ministry of Foreign Affairs” issued a new statement, speaking of a “violation of the airspace” of the pseudo-state, expressing readiness “to take all necessary measures in cooperation” with Turkey.
According to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper “Kypris Postasi”, in its statement, the so-called “Ministry of Foreign Affairs” characterizes as “audacity and lack of seriousness” the statement of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Cyprus that the flight of the French aircraft had the permission of Nicosia. It claims that “the Greek Cypriot side, under the guise of the Republic of Cyprus, has no jurisdiction to issue flight permits for the entire airspace of the island”.
According to the pseudo-state, flights in the airspace over the occupied areas have been taking place since 1977 in the “airspace” of the illegal airport and are directed by its “air traffic control center”.
According to the statement, the Greek Cypriot side has intervened in these flights from time to time. Furthermore, dissatisfaction is expressed with the attitude of countries such as France, which, as claimed, “do not realize the dangerous game they are playing” by giving weight to the “authoritarian behaviors” of the Greek Cypriot side.
The so-called “Ministry of Foreign Affairs” states that it will not tolerate such “careless” actions and refers to its readiness “to take, in cooperation with Turkey, all necessary measures”.
On December 20, within the framework of the 2017 Defense Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and France, French fighter jets “violated the internal space” of the pseudo-state and flew low in the Lefka area, “endangering human lives,” the so-called “Foreign Ministry” had claimed.
The pseudo-state had strongly condemned “this violation by France, which has caused great concern to our people.”
The Republic of Cyprus has long made bilateral military agreements and the pseudo state claims this is increasing tension in the region, on the grounds that it is under a “security threat,” it said in a statement on December 21. “We would like to emphasize that we will never allow this support and military cooperation provided to the Greek Cypriot administration under the guise of strategic partnership to threaten the peace and security of the Turkish Cypriot people,” it noted.
The so-called “foreign ministry” said it called on all interested parties, especially France, which encourages the Greek Cypriot side in the military field, to immediately abandon actions that would endanger the security of the region, and to act with common sense.
