An investigation into the circumstances of the death of 24-year-old Anastasia Melega from Moldova, who was found dead in a nightclub bathroom in the Occupied Territories, is being called for by humanitarian organizations, reporting that the young woman was being held as a sex slave.
The 24-year-old, who had a 4-year-old son, was found dead in a nightclub bathroom in Gerolakkos.
According to the allegations, the 24-year-old was persuaded to travel to the Occupied Territories with the lure of a well-paid job as a manager. However, when she arrived in the area, her passport was taken away and she was violently forced to provide sexual services.
The 24-year-old reportedly married in 2019 and had a child in 2021
Local police registered her death as a suicide by hanging, claiming that she ended her life out of shame she felt as a sex slave.
Eight human rights and women's rights organizations have written a letter calling for a new investigation into the circumstances of the death of the 24-year-old at the Prenses club.
In their letter, they call for the nightclub's managers to be called in for questioning and for them to be prosecuted if they are judged to have played a role in the 24-year-old's death.
Before traveling to the Occupied Territories, the 24-year-old lived in the city of Causeni, Moldova, with reports saying that she was facing debt problems.
