Turkish professor issues emergency warning for strong earthquake between Turkey and Rhodes: "We may even reach 9 on the Richter scale"

The recent 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the sea off Marmaris, southwest Turkey, in the early hours of Tuesday (June 3) has caused great concern in both Greece and Turkey.
The tremor had serious consequences, as a 14-year-old girl lost her life in Turkey, while there was material damage to buildings and infrastructure.
In this context, Turkish geology professor Suleyman Pambal expressed serious concerns about seismic activity in the wider area between Turkey and Rhodes. As he explained in statements to the website haberler, the area is located on active faults that are capable of causing very strong earthquakes, even magnitude 9, with possible catastrophic consequences.
“The geological structure of the area and the existence of multiple active faults mean that a major earthquake is not just a possibility, but an inevitable reality,” stressed Professor Pambal. “We must be prepared, as tremors of this intensity will have a significant impact on Greece and Turkey.”
The area between Turkey and the Dodecanese is a geological crossroads of high seismicity, where smaller and larger tremors are often recorded, due to the movement of tectonic plates. The fact that the faults there can cause strong earthquakes requires increased surveillance and the strengthening of civil protection measures.
The competent authorities in both countries are closely monitoring the development of seismic activity and call on citizens to be vigilant, observing the safety measures provided in the event of an earthquake.
This latest warning from a Turkish scientist brings to the fore the need for cooperation and joint actions at a regional level, in order to reduce risks and protect the lives and infrastructure of the region.
