First Eurogroup today with president Pierrakakis - The start with a heavy agenda, after Trump's tariffs due to Greenland
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
For the first time in the history of the Eurogroup, the meeting is being chaired by a Greek Finance Minister, with Kyriakos Pierrakakis taking over the duties of chairman today.
It is also noted that for the first time Greece is represented twice, as the Deputy Minister of Finance, Thanos Petralias, is also participating in the meeting.
The main topic of today's meeting is the election of the Vice-President of the European Central Bank. The Eurogroup is expected to propose to the European Council the candidate who will gather the required majority. Six candidates from six different countries are participating in the process, while 65% of the votes are required for the election.
The completion of the process of full adoption of the euro in Bulgaria, after the end of the transition period, as well as political developments in the neighboring country, are also on the agenda.
In parallel, the course of the economy of the Eurozone and the member states will be discussed. Greece is not at the center of the discussion, as its fiscal performance for 2025 and 2026 is assessed as particularly satisfactory. On the contrary, there is concern about other major European economies, including Germany.
Other topics of the meeting are expected to discuss developments arising from trade relations with Greenland, as well as the effects of the imposition of tariffs by the United States.
