Holy Light: The scenarios being considered for the transfer to Greece

Featured Holy Light: The scenarios being considered for the transfer to Greece

Every Easter, known as Pascha among Orthodox Christians, on Easter Saturday, holy light is said to miraculously appear in the Tomb of Christ (the Aedicule) inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. The Greek Orthodox Patriarch retrieves the light in the form of lit candles from which the holy fire is passed from person to person gathered in the church, each with a candle, and from there is carried to churches across the world.

The decisions regarding the Holy Light and its transfer to Greece (and beyond) are imminent amid hostilities in the Middle East.

While the US-Israeli war against Iran rages, the transfer of the Holy Light and the sacred ceremony at the Holy Sepulchre are in the “air”.

On Palm Sunday for Catholics (29/3) the Israelis did not allow the Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to enter the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate the Mass, raising concerns about the Ceremony of Touching the Holy Light.

Israel’s decision was revoked after the reactions and access was granted again for the following days of Holy Week.

At the same time, the war has turned Jerusalem into a deserted city, despite the fact that Easter is approaching for both Catholics and Orthodox.

Holy Light: The scenarios for the transfer to Greece

According to what has become known, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Air Force has taken all measures for the transfer of the Greek delegation to Jerusalem and the transfer of the Holy Light to Greece, while the procedures are under consultation, as stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Loverdos.

On Wednesday, it is expected to be decided how many and who will go to Jerusalem for the Holy Light Ceremony, while at the same time the way in which it will be transferred to Greece is also being examined.

In fact, if the situation in the region remains unstable, it is not ruled out that the Holy Light could come to Greece even via Egypt.

What is certain is that the mission that will accompany the Holy Light will be small, as during the Coronavirus quarantine period.

Finally, if the airspace is "closed", then two scenarios are being considered.

Specifically, to initially transport it by road to the airport in Egypt or to transport it via Jordan from the airport in Amman.
