Cyprus Holds First Massive PRIDE Parade
Cyprus held its first gay PRIDE parade in Nicosia on Saturday, where thousands rallied for LGBT equal rights.
LGBT Cyprus coined the event "a huge success", according to incyprus.com. In a twitter message, the organization stated: "Cyprus is changing. Thank you all". Singing sensation Anna Vissi and seasoned gay activist Alecos Modinoss participated in the island's initial PRIDE observance.
The theme of the parade was "Same Love-Equal Rights", and was the final act of events scheduled for the past two weeks. Live performances, film screenings, music, workshops and dances were offered in the two weeks leading up to the PRIDE parade.
The festival was organized by Accept LGBT Cyprus and backed by Nicosia's Municipality, the offices of the European Commission and Nicosia's European Parliament, along with various political parties. Turkish Cypriot LGBT group Queer Cyprus was also involved. Anna Vissi came home: "with much love to take part in Cyprus first gay pride".
