With the operation of the computer, Greece will be put in pole position for its own place in the 4th Industrial Revolution, the applications of Artificial Intelligence and the development and upgrading of its digital services. The supercomputer, which will be located in the Lavrio Industrial Park, has a total budget of 41.9 million Euros including VAT and the project is financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan "Greece 2.0" with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU, the Program of Public Investments, as well as from the European organization European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking – EuroHPC JU.
The tender, which has been running since yesterday, has as its main object the supply and installation of advanced computing equipment, storage space and software, for the implementation of the new high-performance computing system "DAEDALUS" (DAEDALUS) in the new Data Center in the Technological Cultural Park Lavriou, while it is part of the strategic strengthening of the country's Public digital infrastructures, an action of the Digital Transformation Bible 2020-2025 of the Ministry of Digital Governance.
The national supercomputer will not only be the largest in the country, and one of the most powerful in Europe, but it is also expected to be included in the list of the top 500 systems in the world in terms of performance and energy efficiency (GREEN500).
The architecture of the new supercomputer is ideal for hosting the largest and most heterogeneous applications, combining high-performance computing with Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and big data analysis. It is expected to play a central role, among others, in research on the development of new more efficient and reliable services for serving citizens through natural language requests, for personalized medicine, fire protection, spatial planning, but also for smart mobility and autonomous vehicles.
"Daedalus" will be powered by renewable energy systems and modern cooling systems will be used, so that there are low energy costs and minimal environmental burden. It is expected to have a power of >60 Petaflops and will be 120 times more powerful than the existing ARIS supercomputer, performing sixty million billion floating point operations per second. In addition, it will be hybrid, having both high-density central processing units (CPUs) and accelerator units.
The design of the installation of the supercomputer will be done in the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio, in a space granted by the Company for Exploitation and Management of the Assets of the National Technical University of Athens (EADIP-EMTU). The preparation for the configuration of the area of electromechanical equipment and facilities of the new Data Center in the building of the former Power Station is carried out in a joint effort between specialized staff of EDYTE - GRNET, with many years of experience in the operation of Data Centers, a group of elite architects of the National Metsovio Polytechnic University (NTPA) and executives of the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio (TPPL) which owns the premises.
